they call it the hill country, and we called the horse creek ranch and cedar creek lodge in wimberley our home this past weekend.
en route we stopped in fredericksburg (a first for me!) for a delicious lunch at the rather sweet bakery and then strolled the boutique shops. drew got a new book and callie got a few hair bows, but otherwise it was window shopping until the afternoon heat became unbearable.
since it’s only 2.5 hours from abilene, josh and i are already planning a return trip sans kiddos.
we took a scenic route into wimberley, which led us through luckenbach, blanco and some of the most beautiful hill country landscapes. and by thursday evening, we were settled in for a relaxing family weekend of morning walks, pool-side naps, delicious meals and late night talks.
we stopped in llano for lunch on sunday, and randomly found cooper’s old time pit BBQ. it was like. no. other. there was a line around the outside of the building and drew all but refused to get out of the car, so we almost bailed. but I’m soooo glad we didn’t. when we got to the front door, it was literally a HUGE pit of meat: beef, pork and goat ribs, chicken, pork, brisket, sausage. you name, they had it, and gladly dunked it in sauce and slapped it on the tray. it was biergarten-style seating and the tables were stocked with everything else to complete the meal. it was definitely an experience!
the weather (and humidity) in the hill country was also in the triple digits, but it never really felt that hot with the trees, shade and breeze. but it’s funny how the grass is always greener, because i joyfully welcomed our dry-dry-dry west texas air with open arms this morning!!
anyone have recommendations for our return visit to frederickburg?
have a great week!
