independence day…

The week ahead will be focused on lil’ sister and her big FIRST birthday celebration, so we decided this past Saturday would be a perfect one to devote some extra special attention to the little guy.

Callie spent the afternoon with Aunt B while Josh, Molly and I took Drew to see Cars 2...his first movie theater experience. [Disclaimer: I’ve been known to let my expectations get the best of me, and this was probably a good example.] We mistakenly thought we’d be the only ones trying to escape the brutal heat for the noon showing, and in turn we barely got enough seats to sit together. Drew had to sit in our lap, which was fine because I don’t think his legs would actually hold the seat down…HA!  And then the movie itself was disappointing for some very loyal Pixar fans. Granted, it was an entertaining action flick and he was engrossed through the whole movie. But for the most part, I thought it was too complicated and wildly inappropriate (guns, explosions, violence) for a 2 or 3 year old. Regardless, it WAS fun and he thoroughly enjoyed it…and really, that’s all that matters…as long as he doesn’t pretend to “boom” at his sister anytime soon.

Then after nap on Saturday, we made a huge deal [rightfully so] about his transition from baby crib to “big boy bed”. We probably could have held out for a few more months, considering he’s successfully attempted to climb out only once. But for me, he’s just gotten too big to lift up and over the rail. And with this new bed configuration, our nighttime ritual is a little sweeter. Rather than sprawling on the floor, we get to snuggle in bed with his pillow, five blankets, and a few cars or trains to read our stories, all followed by a big “bear hug” before he’s off to sweet sweet dreams.

This age of exploration and independence certainly has its challenges, but they are definitely outnumbered with priceless rewards in the form of laughter, love, smiles and silliness.

Love, love, love my precious DB!!
