sorry charlie…

margie

…or rather, sorry Margie, you are no longer welcome in our home!

despite buying organic produce and milk when it’s available, i know there are a lot of other things (we continue) to consume that are not good for us. but i’m feeling down right ignorant after reading seven of nine chapters in real food by nina planck.

the book is chalk-full of historical and scientific facts to suggest we should abandon the over processed and under-nutritious food craze (guilty!) and actually savor meat and dairy products in their natural form just as our ancestors have for thousands of years.

the concept is certainly not unique or revolutionary (maybe it should be!), but she speaks in detail about the conditions, processes, chemicals and additives used in almost all modern industrial farming. all of which are the most probable links to cancers and many other heath conditions prevalent in only the last 100 or so years.

chapter 7: “recipe for margarine – begin with a polyunsaturated, liquid vegetable oil rancid from extraction under high heat. any oil will do, but about 85 percent of hydrogenated oils are soybean. mix with tiny metal particles, usually nickel oxide. in a high-pressure, high-temperature reactor, shoot hydrogen atoms at the unsaturated carbon. add soaplike emulsifiers and starch to make it soft and creamy. steam to remove foul odors, bleach away the gray color, dye it yellow, and add artificial flavors.”

uh, you had me at tiny metal particles. thanks, but no thanks.

i might not give up chick-fil-a just yet, but this is truly an enlightening read (still two chapters left) which has immediately inspired me to choose more healthy and safe food options for our family.

mom, bring on the organic bacon and free range eggs!

Great Post honey. 94 yr old Granma Broderick has been
preaching this for years. Very interesting info. Brian and I were just discussing this yesterday as a matter of fact. Butter and eggs (if you're not sensitive to them) are the way to go. I'm definitely with you on this.
love you,
D

Hold the phone, did Josh hear what you just said to me?? He is loving this transition as far as the bacon and eggs are considered. Peepa taught me to use real butter years ago. Olive oil, butter and bacon makes the world go round. :) Huge move sweety.
